How to Pitch Your Story to the Media: 5 Tips for Brands & Business Owners

Following my feature in the Surf Coast Times (read it here), I asked my community a simple question:

“What’s stopping you from submitting your story to the media?”

The top answer?

👉 “I don’t know where to start.”

So to make it easier, I’ve put together five quick tips to help brands and business owners feel confident pitching their story to publications (because babe, your story deserves to be heard!)

1. Know your story inside out

Before you even open your inbox, get clear on your “why” and what makes you worth writing about. A well-defined story is your foundation — it makes every pitch sharper, smarter, and easier for an editor to say yes to.

2. Have high-quality images ready to go

Editors are busy and deadlines are tight. Having professional, curated photos on hand puts you ahead of the pack and makes it easier for a publication to feature your story. Think of it as giving them everything they need to showcase you beautifully.

3. Do your research

Blanket pitches don’t work — they signal laziness. Take the time to understand the publication, their vibe, and their audience. Tailor your pitch so it feels personal and relevant. A little homework goes a long way.

4. Keep your pitch sharp and focused

Editors don’t need your life story. They need:

  • A clear hook

  • A unique angle

  • A reason to care about you and what you do

Cut the fluff and make it easy for them to see why your story belongs in their pages.

5. Be easy to work with

Quick replies, clear communication, respect, and gratitude go a long way. Journalists remember dream clients — the ones who make their job easier and enjoyable. Be that client.

Pitching to the media might feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! You have a story worth sharing — and the right preparation can make sure it gets seen.

💡 Extra tip: Think of every pitch as a collaboration, not just a request. Editors want stories that fit their audience and their platform — and when you make it easy for them, they’ll want to feature you.
