How to stop overthinking your social media

Social Media Burnout?
5 Reminders for Creatives & Business Owners

I hang out with enough business owners to know that social media, particularly Instagram, is a huge hang-up, irritation, and sometimes downright stress-inducer.

Now, I’m not saying I have a perfect relationship with social media, or that I don’t sometimes post and think, WTF, where are all the comments? BUT I can see it’s a real struggle for so many creatives and small business owners.

So if you’re spending hours overthinking what to post, obsessing over likes, or worrying that your content isn’t “good enough,” take a chill pill. Here are some reminders for ya:

1. Don’t Freak Out Over Vanity Metrics

A few likes, comments, or low engagement don’t define your worth or your business. Social media algorithms are out of our hands, and engagement doesn’t always reflect the impact of your content.

While you’re obsessing over small numbers, others are quietly building strong foundations by showing up consistently, sharing their voice, and slowly earning credibility.

Focus on what you can control, not the numbers you can’t.

2. Social Media Isn’t the Only Way to Get Known

Your time and energy are precious AF. And while it’s easy to get sucked into scrolling, posting, and comparing, think about other ways to grow your presence:

  • Networking

  • Collaborations

  • Guest appearances

  • Newsletters

  • Podcasts

  • Speaking opportunities

  • Word-of-mouth referrals

Think strategically about where your energy actually pays off. Social media is just one piece of the puzzle.

3. Stop Posting Just to Post

Random posts won’t move the needle, but intentional ones can. Before you hit “post,” ask yourself:

  • Am I educating my audience or providing value?

  • Am I showing behind-the-scenes of my process, giving them a glimpse into my world?

  • Am I building trust and authenticity?

  • Am I showcasing my portfolio or recent work?

  • Am I driving meaningful action, like a sale, signup, or inquiry?

When your posts have a clear purpose, content creation becomes easier, more fun, and more effective.

4. Stop Overcomplicating It

Stop overthinking. Stop aiming for perfection. Social media thrives on the unpolished, unfiltered vibe. People connect with real humans, not flawless highlight reels.

Done > perfect—always.

5. Experiment and Evolve

Social media is constantly changing. Algorithms shift, trends evolve, and what worked last month may not work today.

Treat your content strategy like a game: test, learn, iterate. You’re free to experiment, pivot, and evolve. Keep it fun, and give yourself permission to change as the rules change.

And maybe most importantly: don’t let content distract you from your real work. Serving clients, honing your craft, and doing your soul work is your priority. Content creation should amplify your work—not replace it.

Social media can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to run your life. By focusing on what matters, creating intentional content, and staying true to yourself, you’ll show up authentically, reach the right people, and keep your sanity intact.
